Mrs. Florence Meltzer, aged 85 of Grant our beloved mother and grandmother passed away unexpectantly Sunday, November 24, 2002.  She was born May 18, 1917 in Virginia, MN.   She married Arthur Meltzer November 21, 1942 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded her in death September 24, 1999.  Florence graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing Education.  She went on to teach at Washington University in St. Louis, MO to train nurses for active duty during WWII and also taught at Hines Veteran Hospital in Chicago, IL.  In 1947 she and Arthur settled in Grant and started their own business called "Art's Family Shoe Store".  While raising her children, she worked in the family business and then was director of nursing at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility near Fremont for 22 years.  Also during this time she developed a Nurses Training Program.  She was an active member of the Michigan State Legislative committee for Geriatric Nursing Care and the Michigan Nurses Association.   She also served on the Grant Library Board for several years and was instrumental in starting the first high school Girl Scout Troop in Newaygo County.  She is survived by her two daughters, Charlene Meltzer of Saginaw and Linda Piper of Owosso, her very special grandson Randy Arthur Piper, her brother-in-law Bill & Rose Meltzer of St. Paul, MN and many nieces and nephews.  There will be no visitation, however, there will be a Memorial Service 11:00 A. M. on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at the McKinley Funeral Home in Grant with Mr. Charles Pontious officiating, followed by a luncheon at the Newaygo VFW Post #4249.  For Memorials please consider the VFW Children's Home or the Grant Library.
