Mr. Erich Bechler, aged 96, of Newaygo, Croton Township, formerly of Grand Rapids, died peacefully Sunday, June 6, 2004 at his home.  His belove wife, Gustel, preceded him in death on April 7, 2004.  Erich was born in Hemer, County of Iserlohn, Germany on April 26, 1908, son of Anna Emilie (Hensel) and Franz Moritz Bechler.  He Married Gustel on July 27, 1935 in Niederhemer, Germany.  They were inseparable for 75 years.  As an Engineer he was co-owner with his wife of the German Car Service, Grand Rapids until 1974.

Erich and Gustel came to the United States in 1952.  The were members of the Porsche Club and very active in the community.  Porsche and Horch (Founder of Audi) were some of the many famous car makers Erich worked with. 

We lost a dear friend and miss all the "Engineering" Erich initiated and solved.  He will be missed indeed by his adopted family: Ute and Hans Joachim Päpke of Cincinnatii, Ohio; their daughters and families Annette & Jeff Kern, Samantha, Alexander, Vanessa, Evelyn & Tom Daumeyer, Michele & Dough Westrich and their many friends.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 P. M. Saturday, June 12, 2004, at the McKinley Newaygo Chapel with Father Ray Bruck officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services.  For memorials please consider the Croton Township Fire Department First Responders.
