Mr. Darrell W. Nelson, Sr., age 92 of Newaygo, died Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at his residence in Brooks Twp.. He was born Darrell Wayne Nelson, in Grant, the son of Myrtie (Brink) and Carl Nelson on August 6, 1913. He married Peggy Jones on May 10, 1947 in Howard City. He was a Owner/operator Nelson-Ordish Excavating and the Newaygo Zephyr Gas Station for many years until retiring in 1983. He was a Charter & Life member of the VFW Post #4249 of Newaygo; was the oldest living past commander of Post; former Chief & member of Ashland-Grant Fire Dept. He was a veteran having served in the Army during World War II from December 21, 1942 to January 08, 1942 when he was discharged as a SGT.

He is survived by his wife Peggy Nelson, his children Joan & Bruce Sweers of St. Joseph, Peggy Nelson of Grandville, Darrell & Denal Nelson of Fremont, Mark & Nancy Nelson of Newaygo and his 9 grandchildren.

Memorial military services will be held at Noon from the V. F. W. Post #4249-Newaygo, on Monday, May 8, 2006 with the VFW Chaplain officiating. There will be no visitation.
