My parents, Lawrence and Una Wheeler, and we children came to Fremont in 1923. Bob and Ethel Marvin and the Hill families were among our first friends and neighbors. I was only 5 years old at that time. Ethel was almost like another mother to me. They were wonderful people. I have so many wonderful memories of Ethel.

I met Ethel when she was a young 96 years old. She was attending our church with her neice Marge & she would get lonely during the day, I joined the Stephen Ministry program at my church & was assigned Ethel. I started visiting with her weekly & we became friends, even though our ages were 60 years apart! She retaught me how to knit & she played a mean game of chinese checkers, she beat me every time! I kept visiting her in the nursing home although I couldn't get there as often as I would have liked. My husband & children would go with me from time to time, Ethel loved seeing my kids. She was a terrific lady, & I will miss her, but I know she is smiling with that twinkle in her eyes right now.

Ethel was one of the most inspiring leaders in our little community. She helped build her home, cheerfully taught 4H knitting, as well as a myrida of other skills, but, most importantly, taught character building and encouraged self confidence. We will not forget her kind spirit and helpful ways. She was a great person and wonderful neighbor.

"Aunt" Ethel was a neighbor, who watched me for years while my folks worked. She taught me so many things, In 4-H she taught me how to knit, sew, plant flowers, and truly be the person you can be. My brothers and I would go over in the evenings, and play monopoly, however chinese checkers was her favorite game. We as neighbors built a storm shelter, in case of bad storms, we built it out of stones, Aunt Ethel worked very hard. Halloween, you could always count on popcorn balls from Aunt Ethel, and that was a time when you didn't have to worry about "bad" things put in your treats. She made bed quilts for so many people, and in her later years, she said she was just making place mats. After I moved to Alaska, my 3 children were able to meet Aunt Ethel, and still remember those visits. We helped move Aunt Ethel back to Fremont, where she live in town for a couple years, during that time she was happy, content, and able to purchase "new furniture" she hadn't had anything new for years. We also took her shopping for clothes, Aunt Ethel, was very particular in her appearance, was so happy to have some new clothes. She then was relocated again, where I lost track of her whereabouts. There are so many happy memories for this wonderful lady, she will never be forgotten, she touched so many people. There could not be any thing bad said about her. Aunt Ethel, you are missed.
