My deepest sympathy for you and your family. I will always remember listening to Little House on the Prairie in the fourth grade. How he always kept us on the edge of our seats waiting to find out how the books would end. He is one of the most kind hearted people I have had the pleasure to know in my life. He always said hi when I would see him at Plumb’s or at the restaurant. He always had a smile on his face. He will be missed, my love and prayers go to your family. Sarah Wigent

For a man with great ambition, aim to please, great recipes (cheesy tomato soup/ my favorite), leadership, strive for the best, intelligence, personal people skills… if I were to go on, the list would take up pages. From all of this listed above, no matter how busy he was, he would always take the time to say hello and ask how you were doing, and that not only made him a great person, but one who you would call a friend. George will be missed by not only family, friends, employees, participants in the great cruise nights, but as well people all around the city of Newaygo, as we will always remember him, because he had some form of impact upon us. As we all come to give our goodbye, I’m sure you will be looking upon all of us, and as you always did, still taking your time to say HELLO. Thanks again George or to be correct as it was in school, Mr. Manciu. Timothy J. Davis

I started going to what was then Bumstead's Drive In in 1963. Now, another generation has left us, and we are all poorer for it. The root beer and great food was made much better by the presence of Big George, who always seemed to enjoy sitting with the guests and talking about life in general. He was a good man with a great attitude, even when life dealt him a pretty rough hand. I will miss him. I hope someone will carry on the tradition, but George will never really be replaced. Rest in peace!

My thoughts and prayers are with George's family. He was my 5th grade teacher and one of my favorite teachers. He was very dedicated to teaching us and cared about his students. He also had a great sence of humor and the class always responded well to him. I had the pleasure of running into him on a few occasions in my adult life and it was always great to talk about the days when we were teacher and student. My heart is very heavy tonight after hearing of the loss of a wonderful man. I've been gone from Newaygo for nearly 13 years. Everytime we'd visit, we'd always visit George at the restaurant, and you always felt as if you'd never left. I loved his sense of humor as well his love of having fun. He had a way of making you feel special just for being you. He was always interested in what was going on in your life too. I never had the pleasure of having him for a teacher, but my younger siblings thought he was the icing on the cake! George will definatly be missed by all who knew him. My prayers are with George's family and friends at this difficult time. With Sympathy, Renee Potter (Deters) Battle Creek, Michigan

Georgey was always great to my sister and I. He has been a part of our family since before my parents were married, and will always be a part of it. He often shared Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving with us. He was my 5th grade teacher, as well as my employer! I remember when I turned 8, he wrote "Happy Birthday Catie" on his restaurant sign! Of course I was so embarrassed because I was 8, but looking back I can see how much he cared for me and our family. He called my sister Amelda Marcos because of he thought she had way too many shoes! The one aspect of his death that I am thankful for is that he finally gets to be with George Sr. and Buddy, whom I know he missed deeply. I will miss you Georgey!

My family and Mr.Manciu go back a long time. When my great grandpa broke his toy gun and he felt bad and gave him a whistle.. to him teaching my mom and then teaching me. I must have looked alot like my mother because he always called me jennifer.. he finally stopped when I wouldn't answer him till he called me Staci. he tried to get my mom to have me a day early when she was pregnant with me because i was born the 10th.. he wanted me born on his birthday but i wasn't. :-( I always got a free birthday dinner everytime it rolled around tho and ALWAYS got that yummy potato soup! I know he'll br greatly missed from everyone whom he touched lives with but atleast he's in a better place now. Always, Staci D.

My sympathy to George's family. I had Mr. Manciu as a teacher and George worked with my mom @ the school kitchen. George was a good person that always wanted to know what was going on in your life. I have a twin sister and I always knew what he would say when I bumped into him in Newaygo. "Are you Laura-Linda or Linda-Laura. He also called us little "trickers" because when me and my twin were in 4th grade we switched classes and George had to send me back to my homeroom teacher. He had a good sense of humor and will be missed. Laura (Shafer) Veersma Newaygo Class of 1989.

The community of Newaygo has truly lost a wonderul person. George was always willing to help out any way he could and always showed great concern for those who were ill, or hurting in any way. He never complained, but chose to reflect on the good things in life. I have never heard anyone ever say a bad thing about George, how could they. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Our deepest sympathy to George's family. George's Rootbeer Stand will never be the same. My family has been a patron since I can remember buying rootbeer by the gallon jugs on a hot Sunday afternoon. We took the kids there often and now they are bringing their kids and they all love being there and having George come out to say hello and talk a minute or two. When the 'for sale' sign went up the grandkids were so worried that it would sell that they would beg George to stay. He would always reply "I'm in no hurry". He was a very special man and we will miss him always. Bill and Judy Saum-Anderson and families.
