Mr. James C. Murphy, age 78 of Newaygo, died Friday, January 13, 2006 at Transitional Health Services near Fremont. He was born James Carleton Murphy in Grand Haven, the son of Rosselyn Adelia (Rice) and Matthew Carleton Murphy on June 22, 1927. He joined the US Navy during WWII in May, 1945 shortly before his High School graduation and was awarded his diploma in absence.  He served in the Medical Corp. and played clarinet in the Navy Band while stationed in San Diego, CA, and was discharged in 1947.  Jim graduated from Michigan State University in 1951 with a degree in Business, Economics and Industrial Science and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the US Army from 1951-55, serving in Korea.  He married Joyce Mary Ryther on January 15, 1955 in Grand Haven and she preceded him in death on July 31, 2005.

He was employed at IBM for 10 years before going into business as a Self-employed Management Consultant.  He was General Manager of Kozak Studio, Vice President of Manufacturing for Pine Shop, which became Dynal Todd, and later Plant Manager for Grand Rapids Forging & Steel.  He retired in 1987 with heart trouble, which slowed him down, but he still stayed active in civic affairs, Newaygo Sportsman's Club, Newaygo Lion's Club, Elks Club, Brooks Lake Association, Croton American Legion Post #381; Grand Haven Jaycees where he was Young man of the year in 1964.

He is survived by his daughters Kathy Murphy-Voshel & Wayne Moore of Newaygo, Linda & Ronald Benson of Grand Haven, 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, his sisters Pat & Curt Gould of Fenton, Lenore Gendron of Minnelonka, MN, Mary Lou & Jim Barrett of Renton, WA. He was preceded in death by son James Murphy 2004, and his sister Muriel Ainsworth 1985.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P. M. from the McKinley Newaygo Chapel, on Sunday, January 29, 2006 with Pastor David Wygmans officiating. There will be no visitation. For Memorials please consider the Parkinson’s Association.
