Mr. Carl Adam "Chuck" Malsom, Age 87 of Newaygo, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at home.  He was born Carl Adam Malsom on a large wheat farm near Collyer, Kansas the son of Mary (Keller) and Fred Malsom on January 21, 1923.  Chuck joined the U.S. Navy in 1943.  He was a ship fitter 3rd class and survived the sinking of the CVE79 USS Ommaney Bay in the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Phillipines.   Chuck and Norma married at the Puget Sound Naval Yard Chapel in 1945 and came to Michigan after they were discharged from the U.S. Navy.  Chuck owned and operated a portable welding service during the time of the Newaygo oil field operations.  Later he worked as a welder/carpenter for Dawes Fermentation in Newaygo and in Harbor Beach.  In 1974 the family moved to Cary, IL where he worked for Searle Biochemist and Amersham Corporation until his retirement in 1988.  Chuck and Norma traveled extensively in the western United States during their retirement, spending summers at their home on Cottonwood Flats on the Muskegon River.  He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma Malsom, his children Carl Malsom Jr. of Newaygo, Joe & Barbara Malsom of Kalamazoo, Sholi & Horace Roberts of Crawfordville, FL,  Teresa & Michael Tuohy of El Cajon, CA, Jean & Mitchell George of Newaygo, Mike & Diane Malsom of Arlington Heights, IL, Barbara Shockley of Denver, CO, Jim & Cindy Malsom of North Carolina, Tom & Toni Malsom of Newaygo, 22 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren.  Chuck was the fifth of 15 children and is also survived by his brothers Larry Malsom of Denver, CO, Tony Malsom of Collyer, KS, John Malsom of Ft. Bragg, CA, Jim Yanda of White Salmon, WA, Vern Malsom of Lima, OH, his sisters Kathryn Reitmeyer, Barbara Kinderknecht, Carol McIntosh, Rita Mader all of Kansas.  He was preceded in death by his brothers George, Frank, Ted, Steve and Richard. 

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM from the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo on Friday, July 2, 2010 with Father Peter Shafer officiating.  Interment in St. Bartholomew Cemetery. Visitation 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.  For memorials please consider Hospice of Michigan.
